Sometimes it is necessary to downsize or look for a smaller appliance to fit your needs. There are a few reasons why you may want or need a smaller refrigerator. Regardless of the petite size, you still want a high-quality product that will serve its purpose and last for years to come.
What Is Good About a Smaller Side-by-Side Refrigerator?
A standard refrigerator/freezer combo is 36 inches wide by 69 inches tall and can range from 25 to 35 inches deep. However, there are some scenarios in which the standard refrigerator won't work:
Whether one of these scenarios fits you or you want to downsize from a massive appliance more suited to a family of seven, smaller side-by-side refrigerators offer you some more flexibility and wiggle room for a few reasons. You may want a full-size stand-up unit large enough to hold groceries to feed a small family or a couple in the prime of retirement. You may also prefer to get a small unit that mounts under the counter to be used in addition to a larger refrigerator or by itself in a little nook kitchen or an RV. Whatever your reasons are for wanting a smaller-than-average fridge, you have choices.
Are There Other Uses for a Smaller Side-by-Side Refrigerator?
If you have a butler's pantry or an office that needs a functional refrigerator and freezer combo, a mini combo may do the trick. There are also times that you can use a smaller refrigerator and freezer in your main kitchen as a way to separate out certain beverages or foods. If you've decided to purchase an RV to explore the country, a smaller refrigerator and freezer would be a great way to conserve room in a very tight place. Some people think of these refrigerators as dorm-size refrigerators, but they can give you a more versatile and functional appliance if they are of the side-by-side variety.
People who are interested in purchasing a smaller side-by-side refrigerator sometimes find it difficult to get something that fits their needs. Smaller refrigerators aren't always available on showroom floors, even though they should be. The typical smaller sized units are the classic top freezer style and not the side-by-side style that has become so popular for many reasons.

In our quest to find the smaller side-by-side refrigerators for our list, it became clear that there aren't a ton of options. However, that doesn't mean all hope is lost! We were able to find some solid contenders in the small and smaller refrigerator/freezer categories. While they all have similar features and functions, there were many standouts and some fails along the way. The biggest fail was the LG 33-inch model, which had promise with its space-saving ice dispenser. However, it lost a lot of ground with the stationary shelving and lack of height. It makes standing a wine bottle up much more difficult when the shelves can't adjust to varying heights. On the flipside, the GE 33-inch model packed a real punch, even for its petite size. With adjustable shelving baskets in the freezer and an icemaker that allows you access to all the ice you need from inside the freezer, it came out as the clear winner in our ranking for the small size category. In the smallest group, while there aren't many bells and whistles, there were also some fails and wins. The clear winner was the Summit model, with adjustable shelving, digital thermostat and door alarm. These were significant upgrades for such a small appliance.
When it comes to versatility, you can't go wrong with downsizing to a smaller fridge or adding a second under-the-counter mounted one. The refrigerator is, after all, at the heart of the home.
